At Charlotte-Douglas International Airport, children of all ages can watch the planes coming and going from the overlook at the end of runway 18C/36C, located on Old Dowd Road at the back side of the airport. Bring a lunch and stay a while, as picnic facilities are available, or head over to the nearby Carolinas Aviation Museum. Ample parking and plenty of shady grass areas make this a hit with adults as well. Hours: 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Sunday.

Nothing is quite as exciting to a preschooler as a fire truck! The Charlotte Fire Department has 69 front-line vehicles, including six water-tankers, 41 engines and 15 ladder-trucks in 42 stations. You can schedule a tour with a group or on your own, so preschoolers can get up close and personal with a fire truck and all of the equipment that comes with it. Hours vary.
