Taco Tuesday is fast becoming an American tradition, with national chains such as On The Border and Tijuana Flats promoting special deals. Many local Mexican restaurants offer Tuesday specials as well, sometimes featuring tacos but not always. At several spots around Charlotte, you can sample some of the best Mexican dishes available, from fajitas to flan, at cut-rate prices on Tuesdays. Add in specials on Mexican beer and margaritas, and you have the makings of a great evening.

This hot new spot in South Park celebrates Tuesdays with a special on house margaritas, just $4.95 from open to close. Chuy’s margaritas are made with fresh-squeezed lime juice, and the tortillas served here, both flour and corn, are rolled by hand and cooked each day on a flat-top grill at a station located right in one of the dining rooms. From 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays, and every weekday, you can fill up for free at Chuy’s Nacho Car, stocked with fresh taco chips, creamy queso, salsa, refried beans and taco meat, plus jalapenos and some of Chuy’s famous sauces. There’s always something going on in the colorful Chihuahua bar, so be sure to ask about drink specials.

Azteca Mexican Restaurant

Established by a Mexican family back in 1994, Azteca is Charlotte’s go-to spot for authentic Mexican flavors. Over time, the first location on Woodlawn Road has grown to a small local chain with four restaurants in Charlotte and the surrounding communities. The Matthews location offers a variety of daily drink and food specials. Tuesday’s drink specials include Azteca’s 12-ounce signature margarita on the rocks priced at just $2.95, a tequila sunrise for $3.95, a sangria margarita for $7.95 and Coors Light for $2. Although not featuring tacos, the wide variety of dishes offered at special prices on Tuesdays are hard to beat. They include an enchilada/tostada combination, steak or chicken fajitas and a vegetarian burrito for lunch and flautas for dinner.

This fun spot with a rock ‘n roll theme shakes things up with a half-price special on chicken, pork or steak fajitas every Tuesday night, along with $5 glasses of sangria, $4 Fireball shots and $2 cans of domestic beer. For a special on tacos, come by on Wednesday, when chicken tacos are $2, Tecate beer is $1 and margaritas go for $3. The Rock Taco regular menu lists a wide range of taco fillings from jalapeno mahi mahi to fried avocado to gyro lamb, plus all of the usual meats, wrapped in your choice of flour or corn tortilla or a lettuce leaf. Get your party started fast with a Maverick TNT—a Tecate beer and a tequila shot—available all the time for $5.

You hardly need a taco special at this new spot in Elizabeth where corn tortillas piled with shredded chicken or steak run just $1.95 each. However, you’ll often find a $4.99 Taco Tuesday lunch special here that includes two corn tacos, chips and a drink. The menu, made up of authentic Latin American street food, includes elote loco (chili-dusted corn on the cob), empanadas, arepas, gorditas and sabortias, all priced under $5. House margaritas are always $4.95. Not far away on Central Avenue, Sabor’s sister restaurant, Three Amigos, offers half off on its delicious Mexican desserts every Tuesday, a great chance to try its famous flan and tres leches cake at a bargain price.

Perched on a prominent Center City corner in the EpiCentre, Vida Cantina provides a great place to relax after work with daily weekday specials. Stop by on Tuesdays for the Taco Sociale from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. when tacos are just $2 each. Choices include ground beef, grilled chicken, grilled fish, pork carnitas or a vegetarian version filled with grilled portabellas, zucchini and goat cheese. Modelo and Negra Modelo are $3 all day on Tuesdays. Or opt for an all-natural Partita margarita made with organic agave nectar.
