Location: Memorial Stadium
310 North Kings Drive
Independence Park Soccer Fields
300 Hawthorne Lane
Charlotte, North Carolina
Southeast of Memorial Stadium, across Charlottestowne Road, several large soccer fields offer free, easy access to open skies. These are reserved for viewing the fireworks as well, with parking at a nearby school. This is a central location to see the fireworks, and because it is a large open area, families should get here early to stake out a nice location (face away from the school), and picnic there on the field. If you come earlier in the day, do not forget sunscreen, as these fields are wide open to the sun. Remember to bring insect repellent for the night’s show.
1129 E. 3rd Street
Charlotte, NC 28204
At 3.3 acres, Thompson Park is somewhat smaller than other options, but it is close to the fireworks and has a gazebo, a Vietnam Veterans’ Memorial and a historic chapel, St. Mary’s. There is parking here along the two sides of the one way street — the entrance is off East 3rd Street between South Kings Drive and the exit ramp from I-277. There are parking decks in the area as well.
Mecklenburg County Courthouse Parking Deck
832 E. 4th Street
Charlotte, NC 28202
The open air top deck of many a parking garage makes a great viewing area for night photography and families with super-sleepy little ones who won’t want to be close to the action, let alone awake. Pack a picnic in the trunk, set the radio station and camp out up top for a low-maintenance fireworks show perfect for the whole fmaily. The Mecklenburg County Courthouse Parking Deck even has an outdoor plaza with benches, tables and chairs already incorporated as part of its design. Also consider Crown Plaza Parking Deck at 201 S. Mcdowell Street and Target Parking Deck at 900 Metropolitan Ave.
1523 Elizabeth Ave.
This is a nightclub, so be prepared to pay more and do not bring children. Loft 1523 claims one of the best views in the city of the fireworks from its balcony, however, so it’s the best bet for fun families with grown kids. The expected attire is uptown chic. It is non-smoking, and there is free parking for customers on the street and behind the building.
