Special occasions call for special cakes, and no occasion is more special than a wedding. Charlotte is home to a huge wedding services industry, including many bakeries offering cakes to suit every budget. While bakery cafes such as Nona’s Sweets and Amélie’s provide wonderful options for wedding planning, our list focuses on bakeries that specialize in weddings with custom design services to create the cake of your dreams. Most offer a free consultation and tasting, by appointment only.

Cathy Dufault and her sister established Edible Art in 1993, using the time-tested recipes of their aunt Judy, a professional cake baker in Raleigh. They make the rich butter pound cake recipe they inherited in a variety of flavors, and you can choose to have each tier of your wedding cake in a different flavor. Each cake is made to order and unique, iced with buttercream, vanilla, chocolate or made-from-scratch caramel frosting, filled with your choice of creamy flavors and decorated with handmade edible flowers that look straight from the garden. Edible Art is also known for its creative special occasion and holiday cakes, bridal shower cakes and favors and bundt cakes. You can stop by the Myers Park shop for tastings of cake flavors, icings and fillings, or to stock up on mini-treats or slices of cakes and pies available to go.

Originally an art major, Katie Blackwell-Martin worked in award-winning resorts, country clubs and restaurants before founding her custom cake-making business. This interest in art is apparent in the cakes Katie designs using intricate piping techniques, string work, lace work, stencils, appliqués, airbrushing and hand painting, along with incredibly realistic handmade sugar flowers, an art form she studied under the world’s top sugar flower artist at the 2008 World Pastry Forum. She’s also expert at 3-D design, sculpting cakes into works of art. Her cakes have won many awards, including first place in the Grand Wedding Cakes Great American Bake-Off in 2012. If you are getting married on a tight budget, Katiebelle’s sister business, Charlotte Wedding Cake Rental, can help. It rents display cakes made of foam covered in fondant at a fraction of the price of a real cake, perfect for a centerpiece surrounded by less costly cupcakes.
