Making mom cook on Mother’s Day is just plain wrong, and this simple fact has made the second Sunday in May the busiest day of the year for eating brunch in a restaurant. Just about every restaurant in Charlotte will be offering a special menu for Mother’s Day, and our list contains some of the best, including one spot that isn’t open any other day of the year. Take mom to this sweet spot in North Mecklenburg for a great lunch buffet that should please the whole family. Buffet selections include many of Alton’s specialties, including chicken and waffles, house-smoked salmon and praline baked French toast, plus a full array of breakfast items and carving stations featuring prime rib, ham and cedar planked salmon, lots of spring vegetables and salads, shrimp cocktail and more. Desserts include a wide selection of pies and cobblers and bloody marys, mimosas and screwdrivers are on special. Dogs are welcome on Alton’s patio if one of your kids wears a fur coat.

If your mom is craving something different for brunch beyond waffles and eggs, take her to this award-winning new spot in the South Park neighborhood for an all-you-can-eat Pan Asian buffet featuring dishes from China, Japan, Korea and Thailand. The buffet includes a sushi station with freshly made sushi rolls, plus salad and noodle stations, dim sum dumplings and assorted hot dishes such as sliced fillet with black pepper sauce, steamed salmon fillet with ginger scallion soy and salt and pepper shrimp. There are breakfast items as well, including egg fu yung and marinated Asian-style bacon. Desserts include a selection of cheesecakes and fresh fruits.

The whole family will have fun at brunch on Mother’s Day at Leroy Fox. This family-friendly spot in the Cotswold neighborhood will be serving brunch a la carte, with some specials added to the menu just for mom. Exercise your creativity at the design-your-own omelet station, or select one of Leroy’s brunch specialties such as cannoli cream French toast, salmon Benedict or a savory breakfast casserole. The full lunch menu will also be available with choices such as a grilled shrimp cob salad, a catfish BLT and Leroy’s famous chicken sandwiches, made from all-natural, hormone-free chicken served fried or grilled five different ways. Last year, “Momma Foxes” received a flower to mark the day.

Enjoy a special day in elegant, historic surroundings at this exclusive Georgian Revival estate, which is open only for weddings and special events except for the once-a-year Mother’s Day brunch. The Morehead’s brunch buffet, prepared by one of the city’s finest catering kitchens, includes numerous Southern specialties, from soufflés and breakfast casseroles to salads and luncheon dishes, including seafood, carved ham and turkey, plus fresh pastries baked on-site and an array of cookies and key lime pie for dessert. The house opens onto a beautiful garden full of spring blooms. Mother’s Day brunch is also served at the Morehead’s sister establishment, the VanLandingham Estate in Plaza-Midwood, a 1913 California bungalow-style mansion set amid beautifully landscaped grounds.

Take mom on a mini-vacation to Italy with brunch at this top-rated restaurant in the Specialty Shops at SouthPark, where you can dine European style in a courtyard next to a gushing fountain. Toscana offers a special three-course prix fixe menu for Mother’s Day with lots of authentic Tuscan dishes to choose from. Brunch begins with an appetizer platter for the table to share, followed by a choice of salads or antipasto then a second course of lasagna, ravioli, pan roasted salmon, veal scaloppini, risotto or another dish of your choice. A selection of Italian sweets to share rounds out the meal. Similar three-course feasts are offered for Mother’s Day at several other restaurants of the Conte group including Luce in the Hearst Building uptown and at Trattoria Antica in Waxhaw.
