Over the last decade, Charlotte’s nightlife scene has evolved and now caters to a more diverse crowd. Charlotte cultivates its own scene with an energetic, lively and sophisticated style that is extremely unique to our city. The bars, nightclubs and late-night eateries are some of the biggest draws to Charlotte, and the Queen City can easily be described as the premier entertainment spot of the South. While most of the excitement takes place uptown at a decent sized cluster of bars and clubs, Charlotte’s nightlife scene isn’t just limited to these standard venues. Less known about perhaps, are three amazing piano bars located around our city. Piano bars appeal to customers who want to spend time with their friends while enjoying a few drinks alongside the soothing sounds of a live piano. There’s almost a timeless draw to a piano bar, so if you’re looking to escape your normal weekend routine, check out one of these jazzy hotspots.

Petra’s Piano Bar & Cabaret
1919 Commonwealth Ave.
Charlotte, NC 28205
(704) 332-6608

While mainly a gay and lesbian bar, the welcoming and lively atmosphere, beautiful patio and friendly service make Petra’s Piano Bar & Cabaret a place that everyone should visit. The bartenders and cocktail servers will frequently sing sets throughout the night, and the music ranges from 1960s love songs to Broadway tunes to modern hits. Customers can make requests and sing along to the piano or sit back and sip on a Long Beach Ice Tea while enjoying the vocals of others.

As for its ambiance, Petra’s has a unique décor that is dark and mysterious, complete with dark wood tables topped with candles for a soothing experience. You’ll also find a bar that is always well-stocked, so don’t expect this bar to be too mellow–it’s known to attract a sizable crowd. Outside, the atmosphere changes notes with colorful patio furniture, gorgeous foliage and plenty of room to sit and drink with friends. There’s never a dull moment here, and the entertainment runs the gamut––find trivia on Tuesdays, karaoke and country line dancing on Wednesdays, DJs dropping in throughout the week, cabaret shows and jazz performances and special events like “Silent Movie Night.” Also be sure to check out Charlotte’s “earliest” drag shows on the first, third and fifth Sundays of every month.

Howl at the Moon
210 E. Trade St.
Charlotte, NC 28202

Howl at the Moon is a favorite spot for many who visit the Epicenter. The bar packs in a great crowd, and has an outer deck to assist with accommodating all of their guests. Howl at the Moon’s high-energy, dueling pianos and amazing events make this bar one of the coolest spots for Charlotte nightlife-goers looking for an entertaining, upbeat night on the town. From company outings to happy hours with friends to rowdy bachelorette celebrations, the party is always hopping here. If you’re celebrating something special, check out the different packages–the birthday package waives your cover, allows you to skip the line at the door and settle in at your reserved, decked out table complete with party decorations. The bachelorette package offers the same perks with table service and a seating area roped off with “danger” tape, ribbons and bachelorette-themed decorations.

The talented musicians at Howl at the Moon have a knack for amping up the crowd to get the whole bar singing along and having a great time. There’s also plenty of room for dancing, and the pianists are known for playing songs that range from Lady Gaga to Elton John to Billy Joel. Like Petra’s, Howl at the Moon takes requests, so bring money for the performers and watch them (musically) battle over your requests. Each night brings a new special–Tuesdays are “You Sing It!” nights when bar goers can get on stage and perform with the staff, “Crafty Wednesdays” and “Thirsty Thursdays” offer no cover and nightly drink specials, and Friday hosts the “World’s Longest Happy Hour Party.” Also find $25 buckets of booze (serves four or more people) on Saturday nights.

Piano Man
10099 Weddington Road, Suite 116
Concord, NC 28027
704-979-SING (7464)

This sing along piano bar can be found in Concord, just a few miles from the Concord Regional Airport and a 15-20 minute drive from downtown Charlotte. The name of the game here is “interactive entertainment,” and because the show is formed by what the audience requests, no two nights are the same at Piano Man. While the atmosphere here is casual, the entertainment is upbeat and lively. The large space can accommodate a pretty sizable crowd, and the venue’s two, fully stocked bars ensures no one will go thirsty. If you arrive early, considering ordering an appetizer or sandwich off the decent-sized menu; there are plenty of burger and salad options to fill you up before you take to the dance floor. While PMS is usually an unwelcome guest to anyone’s week, Piano Man puts a spin on the acronym with “Piano Man Specials” night every Wednesday. Ladies can take advantage of half off wine bottles and martinis to put PMS in a more positive light, mid-week.
