Best Outdoor Gear Stores In Charlotte

The winter of 2013 has passed, and it will be memorable for the Winter Olympics and the amazing snow we had in Charlotte, giving us opportunities at home for impromptu cold weather sports. Spring is here and the warmer weather invites a different set of outdoor experiences for which the proper equipment is needed. Campers and nature lovers can visit this link for the previous “Best of” article, “Best Used And Discount Sporting Goods Stores In Charlotte.” Continuing in this vein of interest, here’s a list of Charlotte’s best outdoor gear stores. Note that camping out does not mean you have to rough it, and these stores provide all of the amenities to help you survive the outdoor experience and enjoy it in comfort.

Former pilot and mountaineer, Jesse Brown’s travels brought him to Greer, SC by way of the Northeastern region of the US including Manhattan. Noting that the Southeastern market was wide open, he opened a small shop bearing his name in 1970. He later moved to Charlotte, and since then, Jesse Brown’s Outdoors has grown to offer major name brands in outdoor equipment. Fly fishing became another area of specialization. A guide service for fishermen, Angler Service, is provided to enhance the enjoyment of this aquatic experience.

The Sporting Gent offers high-end outdoor gear. This local establishment prides itself as being “Charlotte’s Purveyors of Gentlemen’s Clothing and the Sporting Lifestyle.” Located in Myers Park, one of Charlotte’s expensive real estate areas, its classic mission is “to preserve and support the true gentleman in all of us, from the field to the dinner table.” From Southern Marsh to Sebago Footwear, the inventory accommodates the gentlemen with discriminating taste.

Located in Dilworth, this is the place to go for alpine ski equipment. Skis, snowboards, boots and the rest of your needs will be met by the knowledgeable staff. Note that cross country and snowshoeing equipment is not offered. Even if you don’t ski at all, your outerwear needs for cold winter weather can be accommodated. The selection of summer wear, including flip flops, also bears a visit.

Great Outdoor Provision Co.

Founded in Carrboro, the Great Outdoor Provision Co. initially offered “a stack of Svea 123′s, a rounder of Mountain House freeze-dried ice cream and Turkey Tetrizzini, and a broken size run of Pivetta Muir Trail boots.” There are now 125 staffers at seven locations throughout North Carolina: Charlotte, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Greenville, Raleigh, Wilmington and Winston-Salem. Good service is a high priority here as Great Outdoor Provision Co. loves to make customers happy. The staff views deliveries of new gear from the UPS man as “Christmas everyday.”

Here’s a resource than has gotten many a youth into learning camping skills. From Webelos to Eagle Scouts, all get their gear here. The shop specializes in scouting uniforms and camping equipment. There is another location at 1410 E. 7th Street in Charlotte.
