There was a time when Mexican food and the South were rarely heard in the same sentence. Those days are long gone in Charlotte, where a number of excellent Mexican restaurants offer fabulous traditional dishes. – Steve Hartsoe

Three Amigos Mexican Grill y Cantina

2927 #A Central Avenue
Charlotte, N.C. 28205

It’s not fancy, but if you’re craving authentic Mexican food, then Three Amigos Mexican Grill y Cantina is the place. Formerly known as La Casa de Las Enchiladas, Three Amigos specializes in fresh food made to order, not premade entrees sitting under a heat lamp. The menu includes lunch, dinner and children’s entrees as well as a bevy of side dishes made from quality ingredients. They even have a breakfast menu. Friday drink specials rotate. Try the Enchiladas de Calabaza for a vegetarian dish that’s out of this world. Hours: 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Saturday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Sunday. (On Friday and Saturday from 10 p.m. to 4 a.m. the restaurant switches to a Dominican menu).

Cantina 1511

1511 East Boulevard
Charlotte, N.C. 28203

Charlotte’s own little piece of Oaxaca, Cantina 1511 is a gem of a restaurant. It may be the beautiful interior, full drink menu and spacious seating, that make this a go-to spot for parties and meetings, but it’s the food that keeps customers coming back. The staff takes great pride in offering food hand-created from only the finest local and imported resources to bring guests a truly sumptuous south-of-the-border experience. Both the tortillas and the cheeses are homemade and drinks are made with the best spirits available. A second location opened on Rea Road in 2006 and shares the same great menu and service. Open for lunch, dinner and brunch, the restaurant also offers catering. Hours: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday through Wednesday; 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Thursday through Saturday.

Senor Tequila Cantina Grill

6414 Rea Road
Charlotte, N.C. 28277

It’s unpretentious, but don’t let that fool you. Senor Tequila Cantina Grill is worth braving the crowded Friday night dining room for a spot at one of the handful of tables. Authentic food at reasonable prices and a well-stocked menu of tequila will have you coming back again and again. The wait staff is great and the food is excellent. Try the Shrimp Fajitas on the patio or one of their specialty margaritas for a special treat. Hours: 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and 4:30 to 10:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
