There’s always a happy hour to be found somewhere in Charlotte. The term originated in the U.S. Navy during the 1920′s. The scheduled on-ship entertainment time for sailors became known as the happy hour. Most Happy Hours are held weekdays after work. It’s a time for meetings, networking and mingling with co-workers at restaurants, pubs, bowling alleys and other places. Some happy hours are used to raise funds for causes. Corporations and online social networking meetups sponsor happy hours in conjunction with special events planned by restaurants and bars. Here are a few in the Charlotte area:

Alive After Five is the hulking happy hour attracting thousands in Charlotte! The Epicentre in uptown is the venue. Organizers pull in bands representing a wide variety of music styles. Uptown residents and young professionals flock to these events. Restaurants and bars, within walking distance, offer drink and food specials for the evening. There are beer, wine and cocktail stations throughout the venue. Upon entrance, guests will receive a wristband. A purchased VIP wristband includes complimentary food an drink.

Skinnyz Bar and Grill is a colorful, neighborhood spot nestled in the corner of the Idlewild Market Shopping Center. It is a collage of Gulf Shore memories for owner Jenny Polvere. Bar counter tops are filled with sand, seashells, beads and other sundry trinkets depicting events from Gulf states. Drop by the grill after work on Tuesdays for a $7 cup of gumbo with a side salad. The gumbo has the spicy taste of Louisiana cuisine, but will not fire up the mouth. There’s also buy one steak wrap, and get another free. Blue Moon and Yuengling go for $3. Bring the kids on Sundays for a free meal!

Enjoy a movie, meal and margaritas on Mondays at the Studio Movie Grill. The drink, frozen or on the rocks, is half price for the evening. The menu has a good selection. Starters include sliders, cheese fries, hummus and crab cakes. Get a mega dose of vitamin K from the Kale Avocado Salad. Entrees include ribs, steak, sandwiches, burgers, tacos and quesadillas. Buy the movie tickets on line. The movie grill offers a Girl’s Night Out Series, Children’s Summer Series, documentaries, $1 movie classics and movie parties.

Happy hour for the ladies on Thursdays at Finz Raw Bar & Grill! The grill attracts a wide variety of guests from the young and old, to the wild and conservative. La Paz is a Mexican food restaurant known for its extensive selection of Margaritas. On Fridays, guests will receive a bar special including half-price appetizers. Cedar Street Tavern is an uptown restaurant and sports bar. It’s three blocks from the Bank of America Stadium. It’s a happy hour every week night for uptown dwellers. Guests can enjoy bar specials and half-prize appetizers. The bar food includes three-cheese quesadillas, cheese nachos, chicken tenders, onion rings and the bowl of fries.
