Charlotte is the capitol of the New South, but it’s certainly maintained some Old South traditions like the best fried chicken outside of Atlanta. A meal just wouldn’t be considered Southern without some good ol’ fried chicken, sweet tea, macaroni and cheese, collard greens, black-eyed peas, cornbread and a slice of red velvet cake to top it all off! These dishes can be found in many restaurants in Charlotte, but the best fried chicken is found at these unsuspecting, family-owned institutions of Charlotte.

Featured in Gourmet Magazine before it went out of print, Price’s Chicken Coop fried chicken is seasoned just right and cooked in 100 percent vegetable oil. The restaurant itself doesn’t look like much from the outside and appears as if it was built and then lastly remodeled sometime in in the 1950s. Price’s Chicken Coop is a counter-top with the kitchen behind it and it’s carry-out only. Simplicity and bare-bones style is what makes this restaurant unique, but the fried chicken is what makes the experience memorable. Price’s Chicken Coop serves white meat dinners and dark meat dinners for about $6 a pop and that includes coleslaw, tater rounds, hush puppies and a roll. They also serve chicken and BBQ sandwiches, as well as hamburgers and cheeseburgers. If you’re looking for your southern fried favorites, from gizzards and livers to BBQ, chicken and shrimp, check out Price’s Chicken Coop just off South Boulevard in Charlotte. Hours are Tuesday thru Saturday, 10am-6pm and be prepared to wait in a line that oozes around the block at lunchtime.Price’s Chicken Coop

Originally established in 1945, The Diamond is Plaza Midwood’s oldest restaurant and the best place in the neighborhood for fried chicken. When it re-opened in October of 2010, it celebrated its 65th anniversary of serving home-cooked meals to families from generation to generation. A couple of The Diamond’s owners, Jimmy King and Brian Rowe, bought the restaurant and revamped it after a stint of co-owning the nearby Penguin. Appealing to a younger, more alternative crowd with the retro feel of the restaurant and specials on Pabst Blue Ribbon, The Diamond is also open seven days a week until 2 am. Along with a daily blue plate special for around eight dollars, the Golden Fried Chicken is among the best in Charlotte. Served with two sides which include pickled beets, mac and cheese, fried okra or creamed squash to mention a few, the Golden Fried Chicken also comes with a cornbread muffin and yeast roll or biscuit. Whether you’re old or young, The Diamond is a jewel for down-home, southern-fried food for the whole family. The Diamond

Located in the 4th Ward on the outskirts of uptown Charlotte, Simmons Soul Food Restaurant was toted as having the Best Fried Chicken by the alternative newspaper Creative Loafing in 2006. And yes, the restaurant is still there right on North Graham Street! Menu favorites include secret recipes from the kitchen called “Mama’s Recipes” for smothered pork chops, barbeque ribs, baked chicken, broccoli casserole, collard greens, green beans, potato salad and vanilla pudding. But the best, of course, is the fried chicken topped off with a peach cobbler dessert. This family friendly establishment has a kids menu with reduced prices so the little ones can eat too! After a delicious lunch, why not take the children to Discovery Place or The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library for some educational play-time or pick up the books on their summer reading lists? Simmons Soul Food is located right near all the great amenities of uptown Charlotte, but the fried chicken tastes like you never left home!Simmons Soul Food Restaurant
