The Queen City’s premiere dive bar comes complete with low-priced bargain drinks, one of the best jukeboxes in Charlotte and amazing live, honky-tonk events. The Thirsty Beaver is one of Plaza Midwood’s guilty secrets. It’s small, hot and altogether awesome. It looks like a hole in the wall, but when you’re low on cash, their drink prices will keep you cool.

Over near Johnson and Wales College is another hidden gem. The Pub at Gateway is open nightly and serves a full food menu until 1:30 a.m. But this place is best known for its drink specials of $2.50 pints on Mondays, $5 mojitos and martinis on Wednesdays and, best of all, 50-cent Bud Light draughts on Friday nights ($1 Bud Light pints). It’s hard to beat those prices.

Looking for something to do on a Tuesday night? If it’s not a concert night, VBGB’s has $3 craft draft beer selections. This beer garden has a massive patio, 30 craft beers and imports on draft and a tap system that delivers 32-degree-or-lower beer. Even better, so your beer doesn’t get warm in Charlotte’s summer heat, the bar contains a rail that contains five inches of ice. Pop your glass on the rail and it’s sure to keep your beer cold. In addition, VBGB has fabulous bar food, most of which is under $10. VBGB is so worth the trip.

Over in Plaza Midwood, you can start your Sunday off with a bloody Mary at Joe Hooper’s. There you’ll enjoy a $4 bloody Mary bar or $2 mimosas. On Margarita Mondays, you can sip $2 margaritas and, if you arrive during happy hour, you can select appetizers for half price. The food is really good, so this is quite a bargain. There are different drink specials daily, so make sure you check the website for the latest opportunities.
