Everyone has a sweet tooth, and when that sweet tooth just won’t be appeased, nothing satisfies like something scrumptious from a bakery. Luckily, Charlotte’s bakeries are among the best anywhere, and you’re likely to find something you like at any one of these. – Steve Hartsoe

Amelie’s French Bakery and Café

2424 North Davidson Street
Charlotte, N.C. 28205

Got an urge for something sweet and homemade in the middle of the night? Lucky you — Amelie’s is open 24 hours a day. This quaint little shop in the NoDa art district brings a little bit of Paris to Charlotte with scratch-made pastries and confections as well as café offerings such as homemade soups, breads and gourmet coffee and espresso. If you can only try one thing, try the salted caramel brownie. You won’t be disappointed. Amelie’s also offers music, event-hosting and catering and recently opened a second location on Tryon. Hours: 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Nova’s Bakery

1511 Central Avenue
Charlotte, N.C. 28205

Nothing says comfort quite like a loaf of fresh homemade bread, and no one does bread quite like Nova’s. Backed by the knowledge of generations of Serbian bakers, Nova’s breads are made from all-natural, organic ingredients and then baked in an old-world brick oven for a taste you won’t soon forget. Nova’s menu includes ciabatta, rye, three types of sourdough, brioche and many others, so you’ll always find something no matter what you’re craving. In addition to the original location on Central Avenue, Nova’s has a location on Trade Street and the Farmer’s Market. Hours: 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., daily.
