Featuring American, contemporary, ancient and Native American exhibits, the Mint Museum Uptown continues to set the trend for local art lovers. Opened to much fanfare on Oct. 1, 2010, the uptown facility is part of a cultural campus. The Mint Mesuem’s ground-breaking Randolph Road location, which opened Oct. 22, 1936, was the state’s first art museum. Hours: Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. through 6 p.m.; Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

An interactive establishment, the Levine Museum of the New South displays exhibits highlighting the post-Civil War South. Centerpieced by the “Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers” exhibit, the museum offers a feel for the era’s life and times, its progress and its struggles. “Taste of the New South” is a can’t-miss annual event in early March. Hours: Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Promoting the renaissance of mid-century modernism, the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art opened Jan. 2, 2010. Originating from the private collection of the Bechtler family, it quickly became one of the best art museums in Charlotte, featuring artists such as Picasso, Ernst and Warhol, many pieces being publicly displayed for the first time. The museum also stages educational and public programs, including the monthly “Jazz at the Bechtler” series. Hours: Monday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Wednesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
