No one can deny that summer in Charlotte is pretty darn hot. There are some days that you just don’t want to go outside. All you feel like doing is turning up the air conditioner and sipping some ice cold lemonade. But, let’s face it…everyone is going to get pretty bored in the house all summer. You can go to the pool, the spraygrounds, the parks…but when it gets too hot for even those summertime activities you might want to find a new way to beat the heat. So, get the family out of the house and plan a unique, cool summer afternoon that everyone will enjoy.

Ray’s Splash Planet

Ray’s Splash Planet is a unique water park with one-of-a-kind features like The Blue Comet, a three-story spiral slide. Or chill out on The Orbiter which takes you on a relaxing trip around the slide in an inner tube. Or take your chances in the Vortex, a quick current pool that swirls you in circles. The little ones will enjoy the Moon Beach, a gradual entry pool that eases you into the water. But there’s more than just water at Ray’s Splash Planet. They also have a fitness room, an aerobic and dance studio, a playground, an outdoor covered picnic area, basketball courts and horseshoe pits. And if you get hungry Ray’s Snack Shack, located in the building offers a variety of lunch and snack foods. Ray’s is owned and operated by the Mecklenburg County Parks and Recreation and offer a discount admission to all Mecklenburg county residents.

Discovery Place

Not only is it an uber-fun place to play and hang out, but you might learn something as well. You can spend the whole day here with the family for a great summer afternoon out of the sun. It’s a museum, a movie theatre, a science lab, an exhibition space, an aquarium and more all laid out for you to explore and discover. You can catch one of the free shows at “The Stage” and learn about things like liquid nitrogen, the substance that can turn tennis balls to glass; or the rainforest and the animals that live there including an iguana that you can meet in person; or iridescent lights that glow in the dark in a multitude of colors. You could also check out the IMAX theatre and catch a film seems so real you’ll think you’re actually there. This unique dome-shaped room is the largest movie screen in the Carolinas. And of course, get some hands-on experience when you cruise the exhibits in the Discovery Place museum.

Concord Mills

Concord Mills is the most popular outlet mall in the Carolinas. With over 200 stores, you’re sure to find awesome brands, cool styles and great deals. But Concord Mills is way more that just another mall. It’s an all-out adventure with something for the whole family. You’ll immediately be entranced by the design element to the mall, with every exterior entrance featuring an oversized display that represent different aspects of the Carolinas, like giant beach grass and enormous antique toys. And the kids will definitely want to take a spin around the track at the Nascar SpeedPark. You can race your friends around the track or challenge your parents to a game of miniature golf. If you’re looking for indoor fun, Dave & Buster’s has an arcade that could keep you busy for hours. And be sure to check out the festive food court inside the mall. Decorated like an old-fashioned carnival, the food court has something for everyone. You could spend a whole day here and still not see everything that Concord Mills has to offer. And if you need to get off your feet, you can catch a movie on one of 24 screens at AMC Theatre. Get out of the heat and cruise around the spacious, air-conditioned halls of Concord Mills.
