TALE OF THE TAPE

Tale of the Tape: New Hornets Uniforms Vs. Original Hornets Uniforms

The Charlotte Hornets’ re-brand and return to the NBA continues. This week, the Hornets unveiled what their uniforms will look like for the upcoming 2013-14 season. While the new design isn’t a drastic departure from the uniforms of Hornets past, it got us thinking – which uniform design, new or original, is the best look?

Wordmark
Winner Bold, modern and aggressive font across the chest that plays into Hornets moniker.
Classic block lettering that stands the test of time.
Striping
Purple, teal and light blue from original uniform design with addition of a new gray, also. The striping is only on the left side panel.
Winner The original uniforms introduced pinstriping to the NBA and changed uniform designs in the league forever.
Colors
Winner While the shades are slightly different, the new teal and purple pop in their newest iterations. The colors jump out in pictures and are even sharper in person.
Just with the pinstripes, the original teal and purple colors revolutionized uniform and fashion design in sports. In comparison, the original teal looks muted while the purple seems brighter than the newest shades.
Alternate Uniform
The teal alternate pays tribute to the original uniforms with Charlotte across the chest. The unique teal color should allow the uniform to be worn frequently - home or away.
Winner When originally debuted in 1994-95, the purple alternate took an already trendy brand and made it that much more popular. A truly unique color in not just the NBA, but all of pro sports, the purple alternate was different without being offensive or ugly. It was a true trendsetter.
Details
Winner With the intricate side panel striping which includes the alternate crown logo and holographic-type nameplate on the shirts, the newest uniforms pay tribute to Charlotte then and now without being too busy or cluttered.
The original uniforms lacked lots of details and design elements but that was the beauty of them. Pleated shorts, Hugo on the waistband and a cross-over color kept the design simple but classy.

The Hornets did a fantastic job of paying homage to the original uniforms with their newest versions while updating the brand for today's NBA. From the crossover collar to the side panel striping, the newest versions are a great tweak to a classic brand. These uniforms could quickly become some of the more popular ones in the NBA and should also stand the test of time due to their clean, sleek design.

Tale Of The Tape: Pittsburgh Steelers At Carolina Panthers

The Steelers are a veteran team that should understand how to play in a big game, but they appeared unprepared for their Week Two game with the Baltimore Ravens.

The Chiefs picked it up quite a bit in losing a 24-17 decision at Denver, and that should be encouraging to Andy Reid and quarterback Alex Smith.
