Luke Kuechly, Panthers Linebacker and reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year, joined the guys to talk about his role as a leader on the Panther defense, the First Round of the 2013 NFL Draft and expectations going into next season.
The Drive Tuesday 2-5-13 -Thomas Davis talks with Taylor and Marc about his improbable come back after his third ACL surgery, if he felt slighted by not winning the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award, and how the team felt after winning 5 of their final 6 games.
When a bad season is over it is said to have ended mercifully, but in the case of the Panthers there is a real sense that the best is yet to come despite a 7-9 record. Cam Newton may have come of age in a single 60 minutes of play while head coach Ron Rivera gave his boss, Jerry Richardson, something to think about when it comes to his job. Happy New Year, Panthers’ fans!
It was a day not fit for man nor beast, and that was just the yellow flags that were raining down on their heads. A plethora of personal fouls ruined an otherwise boring game but in the end the Carolina Panthers did something no one thought possible a few short weeks ago and that was matching last year’s win total.
Mac Attack 12/20/12:Panthers star rookie linebacker Luke Kuechly joined Jim to discuss the great start to his career, the season, and more
The Panthers are riding the kind of natural high associated with their first winning streak of the season, and one player has been instrumental in that success. Thomas Davis has come back from injuries that would have sent others into retirement, and along with his off-field charity and volunteer work, he now has the honor of being the Panthers’ nominee for a very significant award named after an NFL legend.
The Panthers are playing the way many expected them to early in the season so one might say it is better late than never. If fans thought their team played a well rounded game against the Falcons last weekend, the whooping they put on the Chargers on Sunday was as good, if not better.
During the Carolina Panthers locker room interviews before they travel to face the San Diego Chargers, Cam Newton talked about the 2012 Heisman winner Johnny Manziel.
In a season chocked full of rookie sensations, one is rapidly climbing the Defensive Rookie of the Year ladder. Linebacker Luke Kuechly leads the league in tackles, just like he led the nation at Boston College, and despite the Panthers losing record, he could get serious consideration for the top first year player award. Carolina is also knee deep in players on injured reserve.
What is more important: How you begin or how you finish? For head coach Ron Rivera, the Panthers have begun to turn things around, but is it too late to keep his job beyond 2012. Over the last half-dozen games, Carolina is a .500 club and deserves a commitment for at least one more year from owner Jerry Richardson.
