On the field, Thomas Davis stares down the opposition, but off it the Panthers’ linebacker has had to stare down something much scarier: the surgeon’s knife. In two years Davis has torn an ACL three times, and despite those injuries, he has come back to play the game he loves in the town where his heart is and everyone, save his opponents, is glad he did.
Not many people knew what to expect when the Chiefs hosted the Panthers on Sunday, because there was nothing to compare it to, but right from the opening drive there was a sense the home team was about to play their best game of the season. And they did, despite the horrific murder-suicide that took place a little more than 24-hours earlier.
It’s 3-8 against 1-10 this Sunday. This is an important game for the Panthers––a loss to the Chiefs would just about signal the end of Ron Rivera’s run as head coach. All things being equal, this is a winnable game for Carolina despite playing in Kansas City, where a lot of teams have had trouble doing just that.
Eleven. That is the number of Panthers on injured reserve–an average of one per game. Now, Ron Edwards is the latest to join the not-so-exclusive club. But through it all, head coach Ron Rivera has tried to hold his team together while doing his best to help his young quarterback get through the trials and tribulations of a sophomore campaign.
So what if Cam Newton was the leading rusher – again? Who cares if special teams was a disaster – again? The Panthers did what they were supposed to and that was hand the Eagles their seventh straight loss and keep some hope alive to at least reach last year’s win total.
If there is one area that Cam Newton has been able to excel this year, it is in the world of Madison Avenue. Not only does the 23-year-old quarterback have his own line of clothing, but he has also been plastered all over the airwaves in a series of commercials––one for the NFL that will have you in stitches.
Ten down, six to go and the Panthers nightmarish season is mercifully over. It’s good to know that on this day of giving thanks there will be three games on the tube and the Cats will not be one of those competing, meaning the use of antacids will be greatly reduced.
They Panthers had their foot on the neck of the Buccaneers but somehow they let them slip out from under it.Carolina may be gasping for air at 2-8 but they may now be turning their attention to grabbing the best possible position in the 2013 NFL Draft after another crushing defeat.
You have to admire the chutzpah of officials from the city that lost the NFL Rams in 1994. That franchise moved because they could not secure a new stadium and now, with no plans to build a one, Los Angeles has targeted the Panthers as their team of the future. Is owner Jerry Richardson listening? That is the $80 million question.
It is safe to say that the mere mention of the word Manning around the water cooler these days might just get you uninvited to the Christmas Party after Peyton duplicated what his younger brother Eli did a number of weeks back, hang 36 points and a loss on the Panthers. Even with six prior losses, this might just be Carolina’s low point of 2012.
