Visiting The Center
Aside from the breathtaking architecture and detail to structure, the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture offers tremendous and rich experiences for all visitors. Whether it be an exhibit for school children or a specialty tour, or a world class event or function…the center is a premiere destination for much that is cultural, informative and historical. Due to the nature of the exhibits and the art work, touching the exhibits and art is not allowed… but viewing and questions are truly welcomed. Grand Lobby, Performance Suite, and the Rooftop Terrace are places were photographs are permitted; however, photography and videotaping of the artwork is forbidden. Exhibitions
The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African-American Arts + Culture is home to some of the most prominent exhibits in the world. Exhibits feature world-renowned artists such as sculptors and painters, who work on a variety of mediums to bring their creations to life and light. Visitors are encouraged to come and experience the energy, vibrancy and passion of every piece upon a visit to the center. There is tremendous history and story behind the work so patrons are encouraged to further explore current exhibits.
Programs And On-Going Education
Because The Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Cultureexists to present, preserve and promote African American art, culture and history for the education and enlightenment of all, the center houses a variety of programs that help to build an appreciation for art and art history. Programs, classes, seminars and individual sessions are available for the public in efforts to build knowledge, appreciation and understanding of art and art history.
The Education and Outreach Programming at the Harvey B. Gantt Center gives students tremendous doors of opportunity to walk through when it comes to the appreciation and education of art. Museum visits, art, exhibitions and interaction with artists coupled with a sound and strong platform make for opportunities for self-expression, academic and personal success and opportunities for personal and future professional growth.
Who is Harvey B. Gantt?
Harvey B. Gantt was born in Charleston, South Carolina in 1943 and attended public schools. He graduated at the top of his class from Burke High School.He enrolled at Iowa State University and later received his Masters of City Planning degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Throughout the years, Gantt has served on numerous civic, business and cultural boards with philanthropy and community focus as a platform. From 1974 until 1983, Gantt served on the Charlotte City Council. He was then elected and re-elected as the first African-American mayor of Charlotte, serving in that capacity from 1983 to 1987. It is reported that when it was proposed that the cultural center be named after Gantt, he hesitated. Gantt does in believe building better and stronger communities not just for African Americans but for all. So he humbly accepted the building being named after him and devotes a tremendous amount of time and efforts in its efforts and preservation.
