She began designing jewelry in her free time and partnered up with Marlene Moody to form Hoopla. This year is funky and chunky, says Gill. Most often, the eclectic pieces begin with something old, such as a shoe buckle, a key, broken pottery — items found at flea markets and yard sales. She found a beautiful, old bracelet made with leaf beads and the bracelet was then transformed into a hip, colorful necklace. Vintage buttons headed for the trash were made into a light, airy necklace perfect for summer. Gill and Moody even hammer their own chains. Died silk ribbons are popular for necklace closures, and coral, mint green and turquoise are huge.

Most customers range in ages between 40 and 60. Though, Gill says her 15-year-old daughter has started wearing some of the pieces. Clients, as far away as Canada, order and request particular pieces. Need a special piece to match a dress? Send in the picture for a custom-made accessory.

Some say that a jealous former lover killed Tom’s pregnant fiance, and Tom took the blame for love of his old flame, a married woman. Latta Plantation Equestrian Center is a favorite trail riding spot around here. Valerie Pierson volunteered at the center for many years, then she bought the stables. She says she’s living her dream. There are some 16 miles of trails through trees and around the waters of Mountain Island Lake. Many come straight from big-city work and go out to ride for stress relief. A big hit is the sunset ride every other Saturday. The trail ride concludes with a steak and chicken dinner with beans and baked potatoes. Bring out a family, church, scout or corporate group for this event. Kids under 12 must pass a Jr. Rider test, showing skills in holding the reins, stopping and turning. If they’re still a little shaky, they will be escorted with a walker. Pierson says to call at least three to four days ahead for a trail ride schedule.

• 1 cup small cauliflower florets
• 5 tablespoons goat cheese

Directions
1. Preheat oven to 375 F.
2. Mix eggs, milk, salt and pepper in bowl.
3. Pour oil in skillet and sauté onions and potatoes until soft.
4. Stir in broccoli and cauliflower; cook until vegetables are tender but not soggy.
5. Pour in egg mixture. Drop small spoonful of goat cheese on top. Cook about two more minutes on the stove.
6. Pour into baking dish and cook for 20 to 25 minutes.

Seafood Quiche

Ingredients

• pie crust
• 1 can lump crab meat
• 3 tablespoons of butter
• 1 green onion, sliced
• 1/4 teaspoon black pepper and salt

• 1 lb. shrimp, peeled and deveined

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 375F.
2. In skillet, melt butter.
3. Sautee green onions until soft.

5. Gently mix and set aside to cool.
6. Add eggs and cheese, mix and pour into pie crust.
7. Cook for 25 to 30 minutes or until crust is golden brown.
8. Let sit for about 10 minutes to set, slice and serve with chopped tomato and sliced green onion for garnish.

He has kayaked the McDowell Nature Preserve, Latta Plantation, Morrow Mountain State Park, Congaree National Park in South Carolina, coastal waters and more. He says that camping at McDowell continues to break yearly records, as more people are enjoying this outdoor activity. Even the rainy month of March showed an increase in campers compared to 2012. Some campers are passing through the state on the way to Florida and find McDowell to be a good stop. McLaney offers advice and packing tips for those who choose to make the trip.

Tip 1: Select a campsite carefully and book early. Conduct website research, read blogs and refer to postings by other campers. If possible, plan a preview trip to check out the destination and talk to staff and campers. The best sites are booked by repeat campers.

Tip 2: Try to pitch your tent before leaving for the trip. Test all gear in advance. Practice as a team so that all party members know what to do and when to do it. There’s nothing worse than arriving at the campsite in the dark, with impatient family members, and fumbling with the equipment.

Tip 3: Make lists. Even experienced campers can overlook the important items such as storage bin bags, whistles, flashlights and batteries, cell phones, binoculars, cameras and waterproof garments. A first aid kit should contain bandages, cold packs, spare batteries, extra water purifying tablets, waterproof matches, a camping knife and a compass.

Tip 4: Arrive at the campsite long before dark. Daylight is your friend, especially if new to camping.

Tip 5: Tent placement is important. Pick a high, level spot to pitch the tent in case a storm happens to pass through.

Tip 6: Don’t use basic grocery store water bottles. Buy a quality, reusable water bottle, and fill it from the larger jug. Pack healthy food and energy snacks. Keep menus simple.

Tip 7: Share the camping experience with a child. Get them outside so they can understand and develop a respect for the natural environment. Support the region’s green space, nature preserves, parks and campgrounds. These outdoor jewels are important to the quality of life for all.

Tip 1: Bring comfortable footwear. Whether it’s an active trip or not, shoes or hiking boots that provide support and protection are important.

Tip 2: Bring plenty of water. Find out if there is water at the camping site and bring a water filter or a purifying system.

Tip 3: Buy protective travel apparel, such as those with bug or sun treatments. Insect-protective clothing will guard against ticks, bees, etc. The North Face and Patagonia are two good brands.

Tip 4: Bring a natural or chemical-oriented bug spray.

Tip 5: Bring biodegradable soap that is friendly to the environment. It can be used on cleaning utensils, for brushing teeth, as body wash and on hair.      

Tip 6: In the case of primitive tent camping, restrooms may not be available nearby. Bring a backpack trowel/shovel to help keep bathroom areas clean.

Tip 7: Bring wipes for overall body cleaning and other purposes. Washing your hands is good sanitation and will keep you healthy. This is an important one.

Tip 8: Bring ziplock plastic bags and larger trash bags for cleaning up the campsite.

Both McLaney and Bartee stress the importance of cleaning the campsite before departure. Pick up all trash and debris around the campsite and dispose of it properly. The goal is to leave the site better than it was found. When leaving, tell the campground attendant that the site is available. Is is a courtesy to campers coming in behind you.

Being Jewish is not a requirement to take part in the active life on the beautiful campus at the Levine Jewish Community Center. Follow the signs to the community center which houses the main pool. Besides swim lessons, the program features water aerobics, swim-a-thons, aquatic therapy, year-round swim teams and more. Infant and toddler classes start at 6 months to 2 years old, with the assistance of a parent. Learning includes songs and games. Each class description includes goals. The PreFin 1 goals (ages 3-4) include holding eyes in water for three seconds and to float. A pre-team class for ages 5-8 will fine tune strokes, teaches diving and builds endurance. The year-round swim team is offered to qualified swimmers ages 5-18. Shalom Park offers swim lessons and other educational activities to needy children through the Freedom School Program. Some 50+ children are brought to the campus throughout the summer. Swim classes are offered to preschool through teens attending Camp Mindy during the summer. The day camp also offers sports, archery, science and technology. Aquatics Director Mario Francisco says it is a priority to keep swim classes small, and character building is an important element in the swim program. Swim Mac trains athletes hoping for gold some day. It is nationally known for its competitive division of training. The swim school offers classes for ages 4 and up, whether for recreational purposes or hopes of becoming a serious athlete. The 1.5-hour tour will visit the Settlers Cemetery in Historic 4th Ward. It contains gravestones from the Revolutionary War and Civil War eras. There are slender, ornate pillars, monuments and memorials inscribed with literary notes. The cemetery contains the graves of Thomas Polk and his wife. Crawling onward, the tour will stop at two haunted pubs for brew and stories. For the historical buff or a new transplant, this is a must to learn more about the Queen City!
