RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — State correctional officials say an inmate who walked away from a work detail in Alexander County has been recaptured.

A statement from the N.C. Department of Public Safety says Michael Brown was recaptured on Friday in a wooded area off N.C. 16 North of the Alexander-Catawba county line. Officials said a citizen reported seeing Brown in the area, and a DPS officer using a tracking dog located the inmate in the woods shortly after 7 p.m.

Spokesman Keith Acree said Brown left his work assignment at the Alexander County Animal Shelter Friday afternoon and stole a county-owned pickup truck from the shelter. Authorities found the truck on a road in Taylorsville.

Brown has been returned to Alexander Correctional Institution and will be charged with escape and theft of the truck.
