The Charlotte Mecklenburg police department arrested five people this afternoon after one of their own was assaulted during a traffic stop.

The incident happened at the Raceway gas station in North Charlotte. A CMPD officer pulled a vehicle over for suspicion of a domestic situation and approached the car, which is standard procedure. The driver of the vehicle grabbed the officer by the arm and sped off — dragging the officer in the process.

Medics were dispatched to the intersection of West Sugar Creek Road and Reagan Drive just before 1:00 p.m. today, and transported the officer to Carolinas Medical Center.

The officer is expected to make a full recovery.
