STANLEY, N.C. (AP) — Gaston County police say vandals have damaged about a dozen headstones in a cemetery near Stanley.

Police said the vandalism occurred late Friday or early Saturday at a cemetery shared by Springfield Baptist Church and Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church.

One of the 13 headstones damaged belonged to Theodore Abernethy, who records show was born a slave in 1862 and died in 1935.

No arrests have been reported.
