COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — Two Richland County parents who told authorities they couldn’t afford milk for their 2-month-old are charged with unlawful conduct toward a child.

Deputies say 20-year-old Samuel Green and 22-year-old Ashley Cheatham were taken into custody last weekend after bringing their son to Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital because the infant was having seizures.

Deputies say the child was fed only water for five days. They say the parents provided sworn written statements to the sheriff’s department saying they couldn’t afford food for their baby.

Bond for both was set at $75,000. As of Saturday, Cheatham and Green remained in jail, and it wasn’t clear if they have attorneys.
