PICKENS, S.C. (AP) — Pickens County sheriff’s deputies are still looking for an inmate who escaped last week.

Deputies say James Christopher Townsend walked away from the prison last Thursday. Jail officials are still trying to figure out how Townsend got away.

Townsend was last seen cutting the grass behind a fence Thursday afternoon. No one noticed he was missing until a 7 p.m. roll call.

Jail director Keith Vinson said none of the jail’s 18 cameras recorded the escape.

Townsend was being held for failure to pay child support.

Vinson said there should have been closer monitoring of Townsend. Vinson blamed a staffing shortage for the failure to keep tabs on the inmate. He says there are only 15 officers on the jail staff.
