It was the punch heard round the triad area. If you hadn’t heard already, a report emerged last night that P.J. Hairston was involved in an altercation at a Durham YMCA. He allegedly punched a high schooler, Kentrell Barkley, in the head during a pickup game sometime yesterday afternoon. It has only been ten days since the Hornets drafted Hairston with the 26th overall pick. Kami Mattioli takes a look at the minor incident and walks through all of the reports that have surfaced in the wake of this story. You can read her piece here, and you can also listen to her today at 12:30 on WFNZ, as she will be a guest on Bustin’ Loose.

Since the P.J. punch is making such a splash, I found an article that was published shortly after Hairston was drafted to the Charlotte Hornets, which reiterated some of the concerns of him sticking around so close to home as he began his NBA career. Bleacher report featured columnist, Mark Jones, outlined some of the controversy surrounding the former UNC standout in his piece, even before this latest incident.

If you’re tiring from the P.J. Hairston discussion, here is some positive news for Charlotte and the Hornets. Over the holiday weekend, The Observer’s own Rick Bonnell reported that Utah Jazz SG/SF restricted free agent, Gordon Hayward, will be in Charlotte this week to meet with the Hornets to discuss a potential deal. If you’re trying to determine whether or not you think this would be a good move, check out out his article to help you reach that decision.

If you’re still trying to recover from a great 4th of July weekend, CBSSports.com has you covered if you need to catch up on NBA Free Agency. Visit their NBA Free Agent Tracker for all the latest signings and rumors.
