RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Extended intercity service provided through the N.C. Department of Transportation means the beach is a bus ride away from some towns.

The department says the Queen City-Coastal Connector intercity bus service between Charlotte and Wilmington is scheduled to begin Tuesday. The service will be operated by Horizon Coach Lines and will make stops in Wilmington, Whiteville, Lumberton, Fayetteville, Laurinburg, Rockingham, Wadesboro, Monroe and Charlotte.

The Queen City-Coastal Connector extends the bus service now operating between Charlotte and Fayetteville. One trip will operate between Charlotte and Wilmington in each direction every day.

Eight intercity bus routes serving communities throughout the state receive federal, state and local funds to provide transportation between rural and urban areas.

The NCDOT Public Transportation Division awards grant funds to local public transportation systems.
