LITTLETON, N.C. (AP) — The pilot of a single-engine airplane has died in a crash in Halifax County.

Sheriff Wes Tripp said the crash occurred around 10:30 a.m. Friday. Tripp said the Cessna aircraft went down in a farm field about 5 miles southwest of the Halifax-Northampton Regional Airport. No other details were immediately available, and airport officials couldn’t be reached for additional comment.

Tripp said the pilot was the only person aboard the aircraft. The pilot’s identity hasn’t been released.

Investigators from the Federal Aviation Administration were heading to the crash site Friday.
