RALEIGH, N.C. (CBS Charlotte/AP) — A Raleigh Waffle House waitress working on Mother’s Day thought she had received an extra blessing after a customer left her a $1,000 tip.

But since it was charged to the customer’s credit card, her manager said she couldn’t keep the money, reports WTVD-TV. The reason: Waffle House policy is that extremely large tips have to be returned in case the customer disputes the charge.

It was a huge disappointment to Shaina Brown, a single mother with a car that needed extensive transmission work.

“It wouldn’t be different if the man landed cash on the table, and the manager had snatched it away and said, ‘You can’t have it!’ It was very humiliating,” Brown told the station. “I’ve never heard of this. Whether it is $5 or $100, I would’ve gotten that tip, but because it was that substantial amount, I don’t know what the reason is but it’s a just a lot of run around.”

Waffle House says it’s OK if a generous customer tips with cash or check, which is exactly what this customer did when he heard the story.

The anonymous benefactor returned and wrote Brown a check for the $1,000.

Brown said she is extremely grateful. “He’s like a hero to me, and I thank him for that.”
