GREENSBORO, N.C. (AP) — The former accounting director of North Carolina A&T University’s foundation has been charged with stealing about $400,000 over three years.

Fifty-year-old Shirlye Cornelia Grandy turned herself in to Greensboro police Thursday. Officials say Grandy had worked for the foundation for nearly nine years before she was fired in March.

Grandy is charged with embezzlement, corporate malfeasance, obtaining property under false pretenses and accessing a government computer with the intent to defraud. It was not clear if Grandy has an attorney.

The foundation has not recovered any of the money.

Interim director Shirley Frye said the foundation is working to make sure the theft cannon happen again.

The foundation is affiliated with but is independent from the university. The foundation supports the university through student scholarships, academic programs and other ways.
