Mike Florio Talks Pending NFL Draft & The Teams Looking to Move
Mike Florio joined The Mac Attack and discussed the pending NFL Draft, the teams looking to move and what direction the Panthers go from here.
The NFL Draft is tomorrow and the fan bases are ready for NFL Football to take center stage. But just as the fans are ready, the teams are ramping up the preparations and the talk of “moves” has started to fill the air. But like many rumors these are even harder to predict. “It’s impossible to know.”
Johnny Manziel is the hot topic of the draft. He at one time was the first pick in mock drafts and he has been seen as dropping into second round. It takes a team to fall in love with a player. We asked Florio about just that:
Who loves Johnny Manziel, “The Cowboys, I don’t think they’re going to be able to do anything about it, but I think they would love to be able to get him.” This is the guy that no-one really knows where he is going to get picked; all the teams are holding the cards very close to their vest.
Just like head-scratching moves that will be made Draft night. People are left wondering if the league will keep the Draft at this time next year or move it back to its previous April date or move it further into May.
“No way the league can push it deeper into May.” This is something the league is going to have to look at because by moving it you are taking Mother’s Day into a further account. “I think the league will find a way to slide it back to April.”
With all the talk of moves, the Panthers are being looked at as a team that could afford to move up and get the guy they need. The Panthers have glaring needs at wide receiver and offensive tackle; this is something the team will have to consider if they want to make that move up the board. But the question is how much the Panthers would need to give up?
“The trade value chart is meaningless….how many lottery tickets are you willing to give up? I would never give up additional opportunities at the crap-shoot to move up.”
In other areas teams are trying to find the right fit.
You have teams that have their franchise quarter back; others are looking to get the guy for their team. The new CBA makes the pay much easier to swallow; but teams still have to make the correct decision on draft day. “I think we are going to see 4 or 5 in round one.” You have to have the mindset of who else are we going to look at; who are we going to get.
