STATESVILLE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in Iredell County have arrested a man who they say promised to connect people to cable service for a one-time charge and with no monthly payment.

The sheriff’s office said 30-year-old Randy James Sigmon of Statesville is charged with obtaining property by false pretense and cable theft. Sigmon is free on bond, and it’s not known if he has an attorney.

Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Julie Wyatt and a colleague answered a Craigslist ad, setting up an appointment with the contractor at a vacant apartment they were able to use. Investigators said that once Time Warner Cable service was connected and the money changed hands, they took Sigmon into custody without incident.

Time Warner officials said they are seeing an increasing number of cases where contractors connect cable service illegally.
