Gary Parrish Talks NCAA Tournament & Duke’s Early Exit
Gary Parrish joined “The Mac Attack” and discussed the college basketball season, the NCAA Tournament, and teams that could win it all. During the Show the topic of Duke exiting the tournament and the opening at Wake Forest where also debated.
College basketball has really had some early matchups that feel like they should be played in the final four. Kentucky and Wichita State was just a game that upholds a billboard. “It was terrific….you have the preseason number one….and playing a team that could actually finish 4o-0…..someone descried it to me afterwards as it felt like a tie game in the final two minutes for the entire forty minutes….” What type of back lash the Shockers would receive if they lost in any round other than the final four. “They looked the part, Kentucky had to play up to their preseason potential.” They played well and no one is really giving them any grief.
Kentucky will play Louisville in the sweet sixteen game, why is this happening in this round, with it being such a great rivalry. “I think its unfortunate….. they are rivals and have already played once.” These national powers are going to be going against each other and really both could be moving forward instead of one being eliminated.
Will Calipari be able to get them to play together again? “I don’t know…the talent is undeniable its funny…the question is can John get them to play well together. If he can then they can be a physically overwhelming basketball team…that’s what you saw….it was the Harrison twins being big, strong and physical.” If they bring the game against Louisville they can win and win big. “If they bring the same type of performance…. they’ll win the game…..their best is better than Louisville’s best.”
Duke has had their problems over the past few years in the tournament. You can’t draw grand conclusions from one game. “A lot of dumb stuff can happen and Mercer beating Duke is dumb stuff.” The tournament anything can happen, that is what makes it so interesting. “I judge teams and coaches off what happens over a four month span……its disappointing but I don’t know if it’s a sign of a larger issue.”
Virginia has got some good opportunity and chance to advance. “We look at that roaster…they have good enough talent and they play in a way that makes it very difficult for the opposition.” They are going to control the game. At this point in the season anything can really happen. “…there is not much difference between the top four seeds.”
Wake Forest job is open and what is going to happen? “Obviously they are interested in Shaka I don’t think he’s going to do that….Chris Mack….and Ben Howland is another named that has popped up.” Chris Mack has got boosters that like him, he is a good basketball coach.
