Darrin Horn: You Have To Assume You Won’t Get Calls In Cameron
Former South Carolina head coach and current ESPNU analyst, Darrin Horn, joins Mac and Jim to discsus the controversial end to the DUKE/Syracuse game and the Final Four candidates from the ACC and NC State’s tournament chances.
On the controversial call: The call with the rule change has gotten really tricky. The technical verabage is, ‘upward movement of the player’s short or arm motion.’ That makes it almost impossible to get a charge. I thought it was clearly a block, but it was a bang-bang type play.
On Jim Boeheim’s reaction: You can’t do what [he] did. If that had been 95% of other coaches, [the media] would be blistering them and calling for them, depending on their job status at the time. Bcause he’s at 900 plus wins and a hall of famer, it’s being talked about, but he’s getting a little bit of a pass.
On playing at Duke: You have to assume you’re gonne not get those calls, don’t you? There’s no place in the country that gives worse calls to opponents than Duke.
On ACC teams in the Final Four: [Duke, UNC, Syracuse and Virginia] are all capable because they each have a great strength. Duke is probably the best suited on both sides of the ball and most capalbe to win in various types of games. Syracuse is a tough matchup. Virginia is tough to play against, but I do worry about them getting into a game and needing to score or getting a bad matchup and having a tough game. North Carolina, from a talent standpoint, is as capable as anybody, especially when Paige plays at a high level. He’s a gamechanger. The issue is you have to win four in a row to get there and they’ve been inconsistent, but as of late they’ve been playing really well. The whole key with them is Paige and McAdoo both have to be good for two weekends for them to do it.
