Dan Bonner: My ACC Coach Of The Year Right Now Is Roy Williams
ACC Hoops analyst Dan Bonner joined the Mac Attack to discuss Round 1 of Duke-UNC being snowed out, Scared Coach K, the Roy Williams can’t coach crowd, Roy adapting on the fly, Duke’s growth and NC State’s bubble status.
On UNC’s play of late: They’re much better defensively than they were earlier in the season. They do a great job of creating extra opportunities. They’re getting steals and offensive rebounds and as a result, they make up for some of their shooting deficiencies. I was really impressed with what they did last night. For them to go down and win at Florida State, in a game that Florida State absolutely had to have, without McAdoo contributing anything, is a perfect indication they are developing as a team.
On Roy Williams: If the vote were held today for the ACC Coach of the Year, my vote goes to Roy Williams. I just don’t think there’s anybody in the conference who’s done the job that he’s done under the circumstances that he’s had to do it.
On Duke’s growth: It’s another perfect example of the fact that just because you have great, highly touted players that doesn’t meant they’re going to function as a team, immediately. Everyone has to figure out their roles, how to play, how to play together and the last time I checked, that guy over in Durham is in the Hall of Fame and he can coach as well.
