Jared Zwerling, Bleacher Report’s lead NBA writer spent some time with Coach Clifford and the Bobcats organization. He joined Mac and Jim to discuss the piece he wrote about the team and his experiences being around the team. From Coach Clifford to Al Jefferson to Patrick Ewing and the trade deadline, Jared discusses multiple aspects of the Cats growth this season.

On Steve Clifford: His coaching philosophies are really amazing. He’s got such a legacy when you look at his resume, it’s terrific. He’s learned from Jeff Van Gundy, Stan Van Gundy and Tom Thibodeau. Three great defensive coaches in the NBA. He told me he took a flight out to Chicago to meet with Tom Thibodeau and they spent the entire day talking X’s and O’s, defense and things like that.

On the Bobcats: They have great leadership. From having Patrick Ewing, Mihcael Jordan, Mark Price, Bobby Weiss, even Chris Whitney, the director of player development. They really have built a nice foundation that has helped Clifford a lot.

On the Bobcats being buyers at the trade deadline: I don’t think you want to disrupt what they’re doing right now, but they’re biggest need is three point shooting. Rod Higgins even confirmed that to me. If you bring in a third great scorer like Evan Turner, that might be good, but there are good role players in Charlotte. At the same time, if you bring in a good three-point shooter you want to make sure they’re a good defender too. Even Turner and Luol Deng are good players, but the key is the three-point shooting to help the team.
