Yesterday, Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera joined Marc James on The Drive to go over Carolina’s 2013 season and his 3rd year as a head coach. Coach Rivera gave his comments on a number of topics including the rough 1-3 start and what turned it all around.  The two went over what caused the Panthers 8-game winning streak, what it felt like to win Coach of the Year as well as some talk about this May’s NFL Draft and what Rivera and Co. will look to address:

The Panthers 8-game winning steak this season, which stretched from Week 6 to Week 13, had Charlotte buzzing with glee. Coach Rivera discussed how that streak came about:

“I think it was the maturing of the team…I think it was about learning and growing and making better decisions.”

The Panthers and Ron Rivera have been hitched for the last three seasons and in his 3rd year, Coach Rivera commented on what was different this year compared to the last two seasons:

“It wasn’t like we were getting blown out, we were always in the games….So that meant we were heading in the right direction…We just learned to finish the games, that’s what we learned the most.”

Even back to his playing days, Rivera has always been known for his cool demeanor and he talked about how that contributes to his coaching style:

“One thing I always tell the players, when you do everything you can control, then to me, you have nothing to worry about.”

Panthers LB Luke Kuechly was in attendance when Ron Rivera won Coach of the Year.  Afterwards, Kuechly tweeted that he was ready to be in the Superbowl in 2015.  We brought that up to Coach Rivera and asked him to give us his thoughts on his star LB’s statement:

“I really love the confidence…every player should have that attitude…..We’d love to be in that game because there is really nothing like it.”
