Man Pleads Guilty To Beating SC Woman
ANDERSON, S.C. (AP) — A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading guilty in the beating death of a woman in Anderson County more than two years ago.
Twenty-two-year-old Charlie Gene Wood pleaded guilty Tuesday to voluntary manslaughter.
Wood had originally been charged with murder in the December 2011 beating death of 42-year-old Renee Charping.
Prosecutor Catherine Huey said the woman had methamphetamines in her system when she died. Huey says Wood had admitted using the drug in the days before the beating.
The woman’s 7-month-old son was in the car when she died. He was not hurt.
Defense attorney Andrew Potter said his client blacked out during the death.
Huey said pharmacy cameras showed Charping buying pseudoephedrine, an ingredient in methamphetamines, shortly before she was killed.
