Mac’s College Hoops Picks
Yes, it is Super Bowl weekend, but it also is a pretty big Basketball weekend in the ACC. I’ve already jinxed….errr, picked the Broncos in the Super Bowl. But, here are my thoughts on how Duke-Cuse and State-UNC will play out.
Both of these teams have been disappointing at times this season, but they have also both picked their play up a bit lately. Roy Williams loves to beat State and he does it quite frequently (20-2 at UNC vs State). The Heels certainly have the better ‘A’ Game as evidenced by their big wins this season. But, if State uses their 2-3 zone and the Heels settle for outside shots and clank them, this could be a hell of a game. I look for the Heels to have a big advantage on the Offensive Glass and I think they might be able to turn the young State guards over and run a bit. UNC 72-64
This might be the game of the week around the country, not just in the ACC. In the ACC, it is the game of the year to date. Orange fans have been wearing ‘Beat Duke’ t-shirts since November. The crowd will be the largest in Carrier Dome history. But, when you get past that spectacle, I think you will find a game that is very winnable for Duke. They have shooters on the outside to hurt the zone from deep and guys like Parker and Hood are perfect long skilled guys to send into the middle of the zone to make plays. Duke has been rebounding better and that will be needed against the length of the Cuse on the offensive glass. DUKE 78-75
