DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — The North Carolina chapter of a major labor union and other organizations plan to make the case why organizing workers in the South is important to unions.

The panel discussion scheduled Wednesday at Duke University in Durham was postponed because of snow and cold in the area and will be rescheduled.

Panelists will then discuss the AFL-CIO’s recent resolution calling for a Southern organizing strategy. The effort also aims to cover the region’s labor history, current organizing campaigns and the political influence of the South on the nation.

North Carolina has the lowest level of union membership in the country.

Other sponsors behind the organizing effort are Student Action with Farmworkers and the Class, Labor and Social Sustainability Center at Duke.
