CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (CBS Charlotte) – Chattanooga has been named the city that most closely embraces the bible by the American Bible Society.

Christianity Today reports the group made its selection based on “combined levels of regular Bible reading and belief in the Bible’s accuracy.”

ABS surveyed 46,000 Americans over a 7-year  period to rank 100 U.S. cities.

Charlotte was number 6 on its list.

The group noted that the most “bible-minded” cities tend to have smaller metropolitan areas.

“Of the top 25 Bible-minded markets, only three have a population of greater than 1 million households: Charlotte, N.C.; Nashville, Tenn.; and Dallas,” it said.

Providence, Rhode Island was deemed the least “bible-minded” city.

Regionally, the highest ranked cities were in the Southeast and Midwest, with the East and West Coasts less biblically inclined.
