Without a doubt, Panthers players, coaches, and fans would have loved to be preparing for another shot at the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC Championship.

But thanks to a stingy 49er defense, timely big plays by the 49er offense, and some critical, ill timed penalties by the Panthers, they will not be in Seattle but are instead starting their offseason.

But with all of that being said, I believe that Ron Rivera has done enough to warrant a new contract.

All we ask in a young player is to improve as the years go along.  when you look at the Panthers under Rivera, that is exactly what they have done.  Steady improvement year to year including winning this years NFC South title.

If you can find occasions when this team has laid down for their coach, you have better eyes than I do.  They certainly have had their chances to do so, whether it was after the 2-8 start in Rivera’s first season in 2011, the 1-6 start in 2012, or even this years turtle like 1-3 start out of the gates.

This team could have rolled over, but they didn’t.  And that is a testament in my eyes to the belief that the players have developed in the guys who is leading the way.

The Panthers are not a finished product, but not extending the contract of Ron Rivera could be a road block in that process.  Something good could be building here before our eyes, I see no need to throw a monkey wrench in that process now by having Rivera coach 2014 with his future up in the air.

Hopefully the big man over at Mint and Morehead will see it the same way.
