Russell Baxter from ProFootballGuru.com, Yahoo, and Bleacher Report joined the guys to discuss the Panthers season, the progression of Cam Newton, and the conference championship games
On Cam Newton: Absolutely he has (proven enough to be worthy of building around). His first year in the league, one of the things I admired about him the most, was the fact he was putting up 400+ yards the first two games and it didn’t interest him, because they didn’t win. Then he came back the second year and he seemed a little changed. He seemed a little more rattled, more irritated, like he had a little less patience when it came to dealing with questions. This year, he really showed what a leader he was and it paid off in a number of games this year.
On Beating San Francisco (and Seattle): The difference in the game on Sunday was simply playoff experience. A lot of times you can take those comparisons with a grain of salt, but this is a franchise in the Panthers that hadn’t been since 2008 and the 49ers are playing their seventh playoff game in three years. To me, Carolina, San Francisco and Seattle are all very similar. They all have the right formula. I do think Carolina could use some more stretch the field threats on offense. With the way they run the ball, their play-action passing game could be even more effective.
On Greg Hardy: Greg hardy had fifteen sacks, but people point out he had seven in the last two games. Well, fifteen sacks is fifteen sacks. He also had eleven last year. Every year, he’s been in the league he’s improved and he’s a comer. Those are the kind of guys you want. The guys who are just on the verge of hitting their stride or peak. So yeah, he will command some pretty big bucks, but I think the Panthers would be wise to at least appease him for a year and put the franchise tag on him. It would be a big blow to lose him.
Russell also discusses this week’s playoff matchups and offers his picks for the Championship round.
