(CBS Charlotte) — Bomb threats reported at local Walmart stores has caught the attention of federal officials who believe the incidents may be part of a national attempt to obtain money from the company.

Earlier this week, several bomb threats were called in to the Statesville Walmart store, located on Crossroads Drive. After receiving the threat, the store was evacuated and a bomb squad searched the premises, but no bomb was found.

The caller who made the bomb threat demanded that the store give him the serial numbers of prepaid gift cards worth $1,000.

Additional bomb threats were reported at two other local Walmart stores this past week, and similar threats have been reported nationwide.

Officials assigned to the case believe that the incidents may be connected, and they are working with federal officials to identify a suspect in the case.
