Former Carolina Panther and San Francisco 49er, now working with the NFL Network and the 49ers broadcast team, Eric Davis spoke to Mac about this week’s big matchup and reflects on his time in Charlotte.
On the similarities between the teams: The Panthers and 49ers are built alike. They both want to beat up and impose their will and grind on you with the running game. They want you thinking about the run on defense and they want to take away your running game. The Panthers are built like an NFC West team, not an NFC South team.
On the impact of Crabtree and Davis returning: It makes a difference. having Crabtree changes the way you play defense against the 49ers. Even with the great linebackers of the Panthers, chasing Vance McDonald is a lot different than chasing Vernon Davis down the field. He’s got Teddy Ginn speed. He doesn’t have all the wiggle, but straight line he’s fast. Crabtree outside is somebody the defensive backs will have to cover. You’re going to have to roll the defense, because I don’t know if they can cover him 1-on-1. It’s going to be a little difference the way the Panthers have to play with the addition of those two guys.
Eric also discusses the play of Colin Kaepernick, the Panthers offense, travelling from the west coast, the Panthers as underdogs, and provides a strong opinion on the best team in Panthers history.
