CAMDEN, S.C. (AP) — Kershaw County sheriff’s deputies say they have arrested a mother who ignored her 6-year-old daughter when the girl said she was being sexually abused.

Sheriff Jim Matthews said the 38-year-old woman told the girl to keep quiet about the abuse and continued to let the abuser babysit the girl and her younger brother. The Associated Press withheld the woman’s name to protect the child’s identity.

Deputies say the girl told a teacher what was happening after a lesson on inappropriate touching, which started the investigation.

The woman is charged with two counts of illegal neglect of a child.

Sixty-five-year-old Kenneth Parker is charged with first-degree criminal sexual conduct. Both are being held in the Kershaw County jail and it wasn’t known if they had attorneys.
