RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Emergency jobless benefits are on the agenda of a North Carolina legislative committee even as lawmakers in Washington debate whether to restore them nationwide and let the state back in to the program.

The General Assembly’s unemployment insurance oversight committee meets Wednesday, the day after the initial U.S. Senate vote to revive the benefits nationwide for an additional three months.

The Senate bill also includes a provision that would allow North Carolina workers to receive those benefits too after they were terminated in July, when the legislature enacted benefit reductions in the state unemployment program. The state wouldn’t be obligated to re-enter the program, however.

The oversight committee will discuss emergency unemployment compensation and congressional action to extend it. The future of the U.S. Senate bill remains in doubt.
