INDIAN TRAIL, N.Car. (CBS Charlotte) – An Indian Trail councilman wanted to attract attention with his resignation letter.

So David Waddell sent it to the mayor written in Klingon, based on the fictional race of warriors in the Star Trek universe.

Waddell tells the Charlotte Observer he used the made up language as an inside joke.

However Mayor Michal Alvarez wasn’t laughing, calling the letter “an embarrassment for Indian Trail, and it’s an embarrassment for North Carolina.”

In a letter to the community, written in English, Wadell said he is stepping down at the end of the month because of frustrations with development and how public requests for information are handled.

He said he believes he can do more good as a private citizen.

Wadell is in his first term on the board, which expires December 2015.

He did include an English translation with his letter to the mayor.

Paraphrasing a Klingon proverb, Waddell wrote “Today is a good day to resign.”
