Mateen Cleaves: UNC Has Room To Grow And That’s Scary For Other Teams
Former Michigan State point guard and national champion, Mateen Cleaves, joined Mac and Jim to talk college hoops.
On UNC: They’ve shown the potential to be really good. I really like Marcus Paige. He’s grown so much. He’s assisting guys when he needs to and he’s making plays putting the ball in the basket. James Michael McAdoo probably hasn’t had the season that people thought he would but he’s been solid. I like their bigs. Meeks has come around proven he can be dependable and James is giving them good minutes. They’ve teased us with their big wins, but they’ve got some growing room and that’s scary for the rest of the world.
On Duke: They have the potential to go to the Final Four. They have two guys who can get you buckets, in Jabari Parker and Rodney Hood, that cause matchup problems for everybody else. Quinn Cook is going to be a very important piece for their success. He’s the guy who has to set the table, control the tempo and run the show. They will have to tighten up that defense. If you can create off the dribble, you can hurt Duke and that’s what we’ve seen, a little bit. You know Coach K will tighten it up and have his guys ready as conference play comes around.
Mateen also discusses ACC newcomer Syracuse, the rule changes, and Roy Wiliams’ success against Tom Izzo.
