Panthers Captain Munnerlyn Responds To Holmes Comments After Win Over Jets
Carolina Panthers cornerback Captain Munnerlyn can add the ESPN “Gruden Grinder” award to his impressive resume all in part to his incredible game against the New York Jets last Sunday afternoon.
Now becoming the all-time leading interception returner for a touchdown in Panthers franchise history, Munnerlyn wants to “build on his record” as their team vies for a NFL playoff spot.
Jets Santonio Holmes called out the Panthers secondary last week before their match up calling them the ‘weakest link in the defense,’ so Munnerlyn thought he would do Holmes’ signature touchdown celebratory dance but make it into a dying Jet plane.
“I just came up with it when I scored the touchdown,” says Munnerlyn. “He always does it when he makes a big catch or touchdown…I had the opportunity to play him for most of the game and the celebration was for him.”
“I took it very personal, me being the leader. I feel like he just called us out saying that we were the weakest link…I’ve never been called out like that, if you feel that way it’s fine, but i’ve never heard of a person come out and say that. It kinda lit a fire under me,” says Munnerlyn.
Now as the destiny of the NFC South lies with the winner of the upcoming Saints/Panthers matchup, Munnerlyn is ready to take on Drew Brees for the second time in 3 weeks.
