WINNSBORO, S.C. (AP) — The defensive coordinator for the Fairfield Central High School football team has been arrested on his way to the school’s state championship game.

State troopers said 36-year-old David Toney was charged with simple possession of marijuana after the drugs were found on his car when he was stopped for speeding on state Highway 34 around 6 p.m. Friday.

Fairfield Central would go on to lose 41-3 to Dillon High School in the Class 2A Division I title game.

Fairfield Central head coach Demetrius Davis says assistants sometimes drive to games because there isn’t enough room on the bus. He didn’t want to talk about the arrest.

Toney has coached at the school for three years. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
